Kaijuology Database

I grew up on Godzilla. I saw him for the very first time in 1974 and have been hooked ever since.

In fact, many years later, I even published my own bimonthly 20-page kaiju magazine (with 60+ subscribers) for about a year and a half, being the 2nd kaiju-only mag of it's time. Eventually, it got to be too much work and too much money to do - and with the advent of the "internet boom" it wasn't that much of a good idea any longer and I ceased publication in 1997.

Now, before I go any further, I should explain what this "kaiju" word means:

Kaiju (怪獣) is a Japanese word that means "strange beast," but often translated in English as "monster."

Related terms include kaijin (referring to roughly humanoid monsters like vampires, werewolves, mummies, and zombies) and daikaiju (大怪獣), meaning "giant monster". Although technically speaking, all of the following profiles are those of daikaiju, they are referred to here as kaiju, which is just as fitting.

The most famous kaiju of all is, of course, Godzilla. Other well-known kaiju include Mothra, Rodan, King Kong, Clover, and Gamera.

Kaiju and kaijin are typically mutated conventional animals, insects or mythological creatures.

In the following section I will attempt to provide information on Earth's Kaiju, given from the perspective of an experienced Kaijuologist.

A note on the kaiju names: All of the Japanese monsters' original names are spelled in romaji - a romanization of Japanese which is normally written in logographic characters borrowed from Chinese (kanji) and syllabic scripts (kana). This has led to some very incorrectly transliterated names, mostly due to Westerners attempting to be "cool". For example, デストロイア (the kaiju known in romaji as Desutoroia or Destoroyah) is often spelled as "Destroyah". This is entirely incorrect, as it does not allow for the differences between Japanese and English to be shown. In all such cases, the proper westernized name (in the example above, it would be "Destroyer".) is used.
