Fantasy Flight Games inks deal with Games Workshop - Dark Heresy will continue!

Fantasy Flight Games and Games Workshop jointly announced today that they have reached an agreement for Fantasy Flight Games to become the exclusive publisher of board games, card games (including collectible card games), and roleplaying games based on Games Workshop’s family of renowned intellectual properties including Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer 40,000. Additionally, the deal will grant FFG the exclusive rights to publish new versions of the classic board and card games titles published by Games Workshop over the last 25 years.

Additionally, a second agreement between the parties will transfer the publication rights and system of the Universal Fighting System CCG, formerly published by Sabertooth Games, to FFG. "We are just so thrilled to partner with Games Workshop in such an encompassing deal,” said Christian T. Petersen, CEO and founder of FFG. “Not only will we be able to continue the publication of some phenomenal roleplaying, card, and board games currently on the market, but we look forward to creating new games for the popular GW universes."

Overall this sounds like amazing news. FFG has really impressed me over the years with an amazing array of quality products. They aren't known for their low prices, but again - we're used to this as Games Workshop customers.

I wont go into what a fantastic game Dark Heresy seems to be, but rather stay here and feel happy for this deal. Who knows, if FFG wanted to, they could easily manage a new Space Hulk too.

Yeah - I think I've talked DH to death here on the blog... but I agree that this can only be a good thing for both parties.

I have their Doom game, which in just about every aspect is Space Hulk (in fact, I use the tiles for SH games) and I love it - as well as the expansions. The figures are sadly not quite as good as they could be, but they are, I suppose, "good enough".

I have to wonder why they decided not to go the miniature game route in this deal. GW hasn't made much of an attempt to revive the game as it was in the old days - and I would dearly love a return of it, along with Space Marine, Hero Quest, and even Warhammer Quest.

With everything that seems to have been going wrong lately with GW - enough that it's even started to make me reconsider sticking with them any longer, even after all of these years (18 next month) - this is a checkmark in the right direction.
